5 ways to keep your divorce costs to a minimum
Everyone wants to keep costs down. Unfortunately not everyone takes the action needed to produce that result. Here are 5 ways to keep your costs down:
- Be realistic in your expectations - don't pressurize your attorney for instant results, to speed things up, or take extra steps to get things done faster. Let the messenger service take your summons to the Court, don't insist that it gets done TODAY! Today costs extra, tomorrow is just fine unless you do want to pay extra.
- Give your attorney, when you first consult, a detailed written break down of what happened in your relationship, all the material facts, and all the assets. Setting it all out on paper may well save a lot of time and allow your attorney to get to the heart of the matter faster.
- Follow the advice of your attorney if you trust him or her. If you don't trust the advice, get another attorney. Everybody will give you information and advice - most of it wrong! You can run up your legal bill very easily by spending your weeks calling your attorney with queries about the latest incorrect "advice" or "information" given to you by a friend. Don't second guess everything unless you want to pay for the privilege.
- Settle the small things yourself. Make a list, or use your attorney's standard one - good attorneys will normally provide you with a list, to divide the small household goods. Getting an attorney to help you split furniture is costly, and the only thing more costly is not agreeing and selling it for peanuts on auction.
- Let your attorney settle the big things. Attorneys have experience, they know the law and they know your case. They aren't emotional, because they are not suffering like you are and that allows them to retain a perspective on your matter. Don't rush to settle the big things, just to get things over, because the most expensive thing in any divorce is a bad settlement - so when it comes to resolving the big issues, keeping your costs down really means, making sure your attorney drives the deal - and accepting that often takes time.
