Legal fees are a concern to all people - as are fees of just about any professionals these days. Like all attorneys we charge on a time basis, apart from in some litigation matters, such as some Road Accident Fund matters where we take on matters on a contingency basis.
Hourly fees depend on the nature of the matter, the complexity of the issues and the staff involved in the work. Our comprehensive fee agreement, based on the Law Society suggested agreement ensures there is no uncertainty or dispute when it comes to fees and these issues are tackled and resolved at the beginning of the matter, so as to ensure no unhappiness at the end of a matter. Our fees are not low, but there are no "hidden extras" or other dubious billing practices. People should be wary of those who advise written fee agreements are not necessary, or try to make arrangements that are illegal - for example, attorneys cannot take a percentage in a divorce.
Contingency matters are handled on a no-success, no fee basis and generally on a percentage basis by written agreement, in accordance with the recommendations of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces.
